ABOUT

Michael Brogan BMus(Hons) is a professional musician based in Edinburgh, Scotland. He studied at the junior Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, then London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and has since enjoyed a freelance career as a performer and educator.

As a performer, Mike is a member of orchestral art-pop ensemble Marram and the Scottish Saxophone Ensemble. He regularly gigs with The Soul Establishment, and has recorded and performed as a member of the Apollo Saxophone Orchestra. Notable performances include sell-out appearances at multiple Edinburgh Fringe and Jazz Festivals, SOUND Festival, Prague Fringe Festival, and broadcasts for BBC1, ITV, BBC Radio Scotland, BBC Radio 3, and BBC Radio 6 Music.

Mike was chairman and principal baritone of the National Saxophone Choir of Great Britain, and led their tours of China, Holland, Thailand, and the Czech Republic. He was also Assistant Director of the 16th World Saxophone Congress in St Andrews, Scotland, and has performed several world premieres at other WSCs in Thailand, Slovenia, and France. As a director of the music and film collective Transgressive North, Mike has co-produced several multimedia projects with artists including Jarvis Cocker, Four Tet, Son Lux, Irvine Welsh, Owen Pallett, Deerhoof, Phil Elverum, and Luke Sutherland.

Mike is saxophone tutor for Napier University and Edinburgh University, and enjoys a busy private teaching practice. He has taught at St Andrews University, St Mary's Music School, and for the Enterprise Music Scotland and Live Music Now schemes. He is a director of the Scottish Saxophone Academy which leads residential courses and play-days for adults, a summer school for younger students, and the International Masterclass Series for more advanced players. Further work with Creative Scotland’s Youth Music Initiative sees Mike visit schools across Scotland as a tutor on the award-winning Jazz Programme. In 2022, Mike was appointed co-Musical Director of the Aberdeenshire Saxophone Orchestra.
